HGV Hearse tribute to driver, 42

Wombourne Funeral Services are proud to have carried out the funeral of Mr David Garbett who died in his cab. Today he was carried to his funeral on the lorry he operated, instead of a traditional hearse as a tribute from his boss & workmates.

Over 200 mourners turned out to give father-of-two David a fitting send off as his coffin arrived at Gornal Crematorium on the back his HGV followed by three Mercedes limousines and hearse, decked out with flowers.

Friends, family and colleagues lined up outside the chapel to await the coffin’s arrival. David, who was 42 and lived at Kingswinford, had driven trucks all his working life and his former employer Andy Freight Ltd in Lye donated an articulated lorry for the procession.

David suffered a fatal heart attack in his cab on April 1 after parking his lorry for the night following a journey to Sussex. He leaves wife Jennifer, aged 37, and sons Ricky, 15, and Luke, five.

A year ago, the outlook was bleak for former Army helicopter instructor Mr. Paul Spragg.

After two years of searching for work in a jobs market he felt banished from, he was one of hundreds of people who advertised their skills in the Express & Star.

Twelve months on, he now drives a hearse for Wombourne Funeral Services, after being inundated with over 30 offers of work.

Mr Paul Spragg, who turned 54 on Wednesday, went to over 20 interviews – and no company could offer him a position!!!

After bosses at the funeral Directors read his plea in the newspaper, Paul settled on his completely new direction.

His advert in the paper read: “Ex-military man. Semi-retired, fit, intelligent driver with own vehicle, too many qualifications to list, seeks part-time employment. Will and can do anything.”

The father-of-one, who lives in Wombourne, said today he was doing well following the appeal. “Wombourne Funeral Services & Wombourne Memorials contacted me through reading my advert, and it’s what I wanted and the hours I wanted. I think the article had a big impact.”
